Mercedes got the strategy wrong and was unable to compete for victory with Red Bull at the Mexican Grand Prix. The middle wheels of Max Verstappen they endured to the end and behaved, at least, like the tough ones of Lewis Hamilton. The outcome was the victory of the Dutchman, another one that gives him a new record this season (his fourteenth).
The Red Bull mechanics celebrated on the wall the passage through the finish line of their champion. The usual fists to the wind and applause. And then came a gesture that has gone unnoticed this weekend.
The energy drinks they applauded Hamilton when he crossed the finish line. Verstappen’s great rival last season for the title. In this 2022 there has been no rival. Neither car nor pilot. Verstappen has become a two-time champion very easily.
Mercedes continues to choke on victory. His car has nothing to do with the one from the past, which dominated Formula 1 for several seasons until the definitive explosion of Red Bull and Verstappen.
There are two races left, Brazil and Mexico, and the Silver Arrows are still chasing victory. Hamilton and George Russell they could have done it in Mexico, but the strategy was not correct. That was the best circuit of the year for the team, which predictably will not go so well next weekend.
Ferrari is expected to recover its usual level in Brazil. The height of Mexico complicated them and condemned them to fight for the middle zone, even far from a podium that has been common in recent times.
Those of Maranello cannot sleep. The difference in the constructors’ world championship is 40 points precisely over Mercedes. Everything can change… especially if they return to perform as poorly as they did last weekend. And those of Toto Wolff arrive grown.
