New car sales seem to be picking up pace. And it is that registrations in October grow 11.7% compared to October 2021, until the 65,966 units, chaining three months with increases. Of course, the accumulated data is not very encouraging, since there is a decrease of 5.8%, with 666,247 units in total.

In addition, it is still very far from the pre-pandemic figures, since in October 2019 93,954 were enrolled, 29.8% more than now. Yes, there is something similar to the current situation: individuals are still very afraid of making an investment. Its sales barely increased by 0.4% compared to those registered a year earlier and company registrations are about to match them:

One thing to note is that the average CO2 emissions of passenger cars sold in the month of October remain at 120.4g CO2 per km0.3% more than the average emissions of new passenger cars sold in October 2021. Until October, emissions have been reduced by 3.3% compared to the same accumulated period of the previous year.

This data is striking, since the registrations of 100% electric cars grew by 15.2% in October with a total of 2,762 units. So far this year, these models accumulate an increase of 39.8%, with 24,387 units.

The causes of this slow recovery in sales are to be found in the microchip crisis. “Although demand persists, manufacturers continue to try to minimize the problems of manufacturing rhythm caused by the shortage of components,” they indicate from the Anfac manufacturers’ association, which calculates that the market will close, “in the best of scenarios, in around 820,000 new passenger car registrations». It would be about 35,000 cars less than in 2021”.

From the dealers they point out that “we continue to talk about a market with very low figures that we are also comparing with an already bad year such as 2021.” The concern is above all from the individual channel, which is almost 40% below the sales it made before the pandemic. From Ganvam, an association of distributors, they add the problem of financing, because increasingly expensive loans are a slab “in a market in which 80% of vehicles are financed.”

Best-selling brands and models

It is the Asians who have dominated during the month and in the accumulated, with Toyota as the best-selling brand, followed by Kia and Hyundai. Fourth position in both rankings goes to Volkswagen, followed by Peugeot and Seat so far this year.

As for the best-selling models, it is the Dacia Sandero that takes the title of the month, followed by the Hyundai Tucson and the Kia Sportage, which has begun to recover positions by leaps and bounds since the arrival of the new generation:

It is possible that the Toyota Corolla could overtake the one from Martorell, although the next generation units will begin to be manufactured in 2023 (of the three bodies). Also beware of the Fiat 500, since almost 15% of its sales correspond to the electric version.
