Orlando has a long and rich history dating back to pre-Columbian times, when the area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Seminole and Timucua.
The region was later explored and settled by Europeans, including Spanish conquistador Juan Ponce de León, who arrived in 1513 and named the area “La Florida.”
In the 19th century, the area that is now Orlando was a part of the United States Military District, which was established to protect American settlers from Native American attacks. During this time, Orlando Reeves, a soldier and statesman, was killed in the area while fighting in the Second Seminole War. The city of Orlando was founded in 1875 and named in his honor.
Orlando grew slowly in the early 20th century, but its population and economy began to take off in the 1960s with the development of Walt Disney World Resort, which opened in 1971. Today, Orlando is known as the “Theme Park Capital of the World,” with numerous major theme parks and attractions located in the area. In addition to its tourism industry, Orlando is also home to a number of universities, research institutions, and high-tech companies, making it a hub for education and innovation.
