Haas will not have Mick Schumacher among its drivers by 2023. The American team confirmed the signing of Nico Hulkenberg, who will be the only German on the grid for next year, and has not stopped throwing darts against the son of the ‘Kaiser’ since his non-renewal became official.
And they’re not exactly being subtle, because Guenther Steinerone of the bosses of the team, has even compared the German with what was done by Kevin Magnussen in Interlagos.
“Not even achieving pole position in Brazil Schumacher would have been saved,” he said in Abu Dhabi.
Steiner also denies that everything was more than done before the penultimate race of the World Championship: “Nico’s contract? It was signed yesterday.”
“It was not an easy decision, but we had to choose the best for the team and We waited until the last minute.” says Steiner.
What he also wanted to deny is that everything has been for what it has cost them each accident that Schumacher has had. “They have been expensive… but We wanted to give him as much time as possible,” he says.
“He has had brilliant performances, and I think we have supported him enough. We have not been fast enough, and we have to progress. That’s why we decided on hulkenberg. Because he has experience and has been in a team of half board in which it has progressed,” he says.
Steiner continues: “It’s not Schumacher’s fault that we are where we are, but we have to progress and we have to have a pilot with experience”.
And take the opportunity to send a message to Daniel Ricciardo: “When talking to him we realized that It wasn’t going to get anywhere.”
