Drivers are having difficulty understanding driving assist systems

As technology advances, there are also changes in the automobile industry. When we compare the cars of today with those of the past, there is a significant difference in terms of safety. While there were no safety systems in vehicles in the past, almost all vehicles now have certain safety equipment.

According to a report prepared by Consumer Reports, although the vehicles are safe, drivers are experiencing confusion. Due to this confusion, some users accidentally turn off the safety equipment in their vehicles or limit their use. Therefore, the company has published a booklet to make the use of safety systems easier.

Jake Fisher, Senior Director of Automotive Testing at Consumer Reports, made the following statements:

“The steering wheel icons, which drivers have to somehow discern and understand to operate ADAS [advanced driver assist systems] features, have become a jumble of unrecognizable symbols. But if drivers turn the systems off, it completely negates their purpose, and then nobody on the road benefits from them.”

To solve this problem, the company has shared the guide with car manufacturers, policy makers, and automotive safety organizations. 35,000 drivers were interviewed for the data in this research. What are your thoughts? Do you think driving systems are really confusing?
