Progress has not been made at the rate expected and this means that we are at the bottom of Europe in terms of electric vehicle penetration. Things have to change a lot for this technology to advance at a good pace and be viable for the general public. It has recently been revealed that also shopping malls go out of time with its installation charging points for electric.
There is an obligation for this type of large surfaces that says that they have to install a minimum amount of infrastructure for recharging electric vehicles in car parks with more than 20 spaces. This is included in Royal Decree-Law 29/2021, of December 21, which comes into force at the beginning of 2023. The fact is that apprehensive (Association of Owners of Commercial Spaces) already warns that the objectives set will not be achieved, despite its commitment to sustainability.
It is estimated that shopping centers in Spain bring together more than 860,000 parking spaces, the majority exceeds that figure decreed by law to install charging points. However, according to the regulations, with that number of places it would correspond to install around 16,000 points recharging for electric before January 1, 2023. It is a figure that they consider exorbitant, especially considering that throughout the national territory there are some 16,500 public recharging points. Matching that amount in such a short time is crazy considering the circumstances.
APRESCO says that all shopping centers have carried out ambitious plans to increase electric recharging capacities, but said regulations are “technically and materially impossible to comply with”. That’s why request a postponement of twoyears, taking into account that many projects will need at least 15 months and others will take even more than 30 months. They add that Spain has been the only country in the European Union to set such a close deadline, despite having slow and complex administrative procedures that slow everything down.
