What is needed in Spain to accelerate electrification?

The eighth edition of the Nissan Forum summarizes the main factors to improve so that electric mobility ends up gaining momentum in our country and approaches the cruising speed that other European nations already have.

It is no secret to anyone that Spain is not a European benchmark when it comes to sustainable mobility. Our fleet of vehicles has a fairly high average age (around 13-14 years) and, to top it off, the authorities practically force us to rejuvenate it with electrified vehicles but with financial aid that takes time to arrive and that in many cases remains scarce. Therefore, it is not surprising that we barely add a little more than 200,000 units with a ‘0 Emissions’ label today within our borders, a very discreet figure if we compare it with the electrified versions that exist in other EU countries. , such as Germany, France, the Netherlands, Norway or Sweden, among others. And beware, it is not that we are turning our backs on reality (in the last decade 90% more electric cars have been seen on our streets and highways); It is that, I insist, the prices continue to make them prohibitive for the majority. Precisely that has been a recurring theme at the VIII Nissan Forum held in Madrid in person after two years of virtuality.

The future does not only pass through electrification: fuels have a lot of life

According to Isabell Buschel, director for Spain of Transport & Environment, the elimination of sales of combustion engines set for 2035 will mean that electric cars more affordable. However, everything indicates that, if no one offers solutions until then, our country will not even come close to reaching the goal of having at least five million zero-emission vehicles just five years before.

The solution is to copy what works

What does seem to would encourage more electric mobility, since it has been a formula used successfully in other countries, is the combination of the following three factors: fiscal measures, with special incidence in the reduction of the VAT of the electrical ones; a harmonization of electric vehicle measures and, lastly, simplifying and reducing procedures and the time for installing charging points. With all this -and with the necessary development of sustainable fuels as another very important agent-, the Government would achieve a significant reduction in vehicle emissions.

However, the Communications Director of Nissan Iberia, Francesc Corberó, wants to emphasize that the effects of electrification are something that we are already seeing positively on our society and on our health. “Last year, electric vehicles sold in Spain prevented the purchase of more than 15,000 barrels of oil per day. For this reason, for the reduction of emissions, for the reduction of noise pollution and for the energy balance of our country, it is essential to accelerate the path of electrification in an orderly manner », he assures.

In fact, to continue with this ascending line, Nissan presented about a year ago the Project Ambition 2030a strategy supported by the investment of more than 15,000 million euros in five years with the launch of 23 new models (15 of them 100% electric.) In addition, the Japanese company is committed to reducing the cost of batteries by 65% , to launch new solid-state batteries and to develop a new sustainable management of its production processes under the name of EV36Zero.
