Many, many people dream of working in the automotive industry. Perhaps the first approach we had was to draw cars in our childhood, but generally this artistic approach to design is truncated in a puerile practice or in the best of cases, in an adult hobby. Studying automotive design is not for everyone, previous credentials in industrial design are generally required and access to specialized courses are usually quite expensive. and generally also require moving to other countries.
But now The Petersen Museum and the Yellowbrick digital learning platform have teamed up to offer a completely free new online course called Auto Design and Sketching (Automotive design and sketching). This course, launched this week, allows you to delve deeply into automotive design and its foundations, hand in hand with various industry leaders.
Over the course of the next few months a total of three free online courses will be taught. The program includes Principles and History of Design, Famous Case Studies and last but not least “Let’s Draw”, which will require the people taking the course to have drawing materials.
These courses will have in their teaching staff designers such as Franz von Holzhausen (Head of Design at Tesla Motors), Ralph Gilles (Head of Design at Stellantis), Christine Feuell (Executive Brand Director at Chrysler), Francesc Arenas (Design Director at Hispano Suiza ), Colin Phillips (Director of NIO Design) and Roman Yneges (Teacher at the Art Center Faculty of Design), among other people.
Justin Wolske, Yellowbrick’s Director of Partnerships and Strategic Initiatives, states, “We designed this course to simplify and illuminate the path to a career in automotive design. High-level training in this field is not always easily accessible, but we have removed some of those barriers by offering the program at no cost.”
Getting started with the course is quite simple. First you have to register on the Yellowbrick website, to then receive an email validating login credentials. With the account created, you can access the course and do it at your own pace. The modules will be published gradually and the first one, which talks about Principles and history of design, is already available and covers various topics.
