The film “ Gran Turismo” is already being shot and will be based on the story of GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough.
Sony Pictures has confirmed that filming of the movie “Gran Turismo” is already underway. And what better place to start it than at the Hungaroring circuit, in Hungary.
Confirmation has come through a social media post in which four Nissan GT-Rs can be seen on a racetrack that turns out to be the aforementioned circuit, which hosts the Hungarian Formula 1 Grand Prix.
It will be released in the summer of 2023.
The film will be based on the story of GT Academy winner Jann Mardenborough. Let’s remember that the GT Academy is a Nissan initiative with Sony in which video game players were given the opportunity to compete both in the virtual world and in real competitions.

Mardenborough’s is possibly the greatest success story of the GT Academy program. After winning the competition in 2011, he went on to win races in the British GT, GP3 and Toyota Racing Series, as well as a podium finish in the LMP2 class at Le Mans. After another race at Le Mans, he took on Super GT, in the GT300 and GT500 classes, and Super Formula. He is currently the simulator driver for the Nissan e.dams Formula E team.
Although the British driver is the inspiration for the story, which also focuses on a young gamer who wins a Nissan-sponsored competition and becomes a racing driver, it is probably a fictional story.
Archie Madekwe (“Midsommar”) leads the cast of the film, along with other actors such as Djimon Hounsou (“Shazam!”) and former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell (“Crank 2”) as the character’s parents, David Harbor (“Stranger Things”) as his racing mentor, Orlando Bloom (“Lord of the Rings”) as a marketing executive and Darren Barnet (“Wow! hard is love!”) as a rival pilot.
Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”) directs the film, based on a screenplay by Jason Hall (“The Sniper”). The premiere of the Gran Turismo film is scheduled for August 11, 2023.
