December’s may be our most searched price report of the year. Traditionally, many people waited for the end of the year, when many dealers were rushing to account to brands and increasing discounts on new cars to meet targets.
Experience tells us that this is not always the case. Not for all makes, not for all dealerships, and not for all years, as there are many external elements, such as changes in emissions laws (which forced the parting of many bargain-priced cars a few years ago), changes taxes, changes in the industry (which must sell more and more electric cars) and even problems in production and logistics, as we are experiencing.
Of course, in November we saw the highest new car prices of the year and now it seems that they are taking a breather, encouraging buyers who fear that inflation will run rampant next year. In fact, the average discount at the dealership rises almost one point, from the 8.78% that we saw in November to the 9.61% this month.
That average discount that you can find changes a lot depending on the type of vehicle we analyze, as we break down in this table:

Microurban. Average discount: 8.3%
The discounts in December improve one point and be careful, the Fiat Panda is the model that is offered with the greatest discount, ahead of the Mitsubishi Space Star, which was the most discounted last month. The Kia Picanto completes the podium, whose sales are somewhat better than those of a car very similar to it, the Hyundai i10.
Microurban cabrio. Average discount: 4.8%
The discounts in this segment improve almost one point, but without changes in the most discounted models. The best is the Fiat 500C with an exclusively electric motor and this month we find the Abarth 595C, whose range is updated in a few months before the arrival of the 100% electric version. A little further back is the smart fortwo Cabrio.
Utilities. Average discount: 10.1
See more photos of the Opel Corsa-e
One of the categories in which the discounts get worse, a few tenths. Of course, the Opel Corsa, with a 1.2 gasoline engine, continues as in November, as the most discounted model, ahead of the more practical Citroën C3 with which it shares a platform. The Kia Rio completes the podium and the Hyundai i20 has to settle for fourth position (both with gasoline engines, either the 1.2 or the 1.0 supercharged).
Small SUVs. Average discount: 8.4%
A couple of tenths worsen the discounts, be careful, in absolute terms it is very little. At the end of the year, the Suzuki Vitara is the most discounted model, followed by two Koreans, the Kia Stonic and the Hyundai Bayon, both with the basic mechanics or the most interesting 100 CV 1.0 T-GDI. The Opel Crossland, leader in October, and the Ford EcoSport are fighting for fourth place.
Compact. Average discount: 9.3%
The discounts win three tenths, but few changes in the first positions. The Kia Ceed continues as the most discounted car and the Skoda Scala also retains second place. the third step of the podium is for the Seat León, whose discounts slightly exceed those of the Hyundai i30.
Compact sedans. Average discount: 8.3%
The average discounts in this segment rose two tenths. In December the Fiat Tipo Sedan is the most discounted model, ahead of the Hyundai i30 Fastback, the Toyota Corolla Sedan and the Skoda Octavia.
Compact coupes. Average discount: 6%
The average discounts are barely one tenth less than those we saw last month, but the top positions do not change. The BMW 2 Series Coupé is the most discounted model, ahead of the Audi TT (with fewer and fewer versions for sale) and the Toyota GT 86.
Family compacts: Average discount: 10.9%
Discounts in this category are recovering, somewhat more than they lost last month. The Suzuki Swace continues to be the most discounted model ahead of the Kia Ceed Tourer if we stick to the discount analysis. The third position this month is for the Seat León ST made in Spain, ahead of the Renault Megane Sport Tourer.
Convertible compacts. Average discount: 5.8%
The average discounts on these whim cars get much worse. The most discounted is the BMW Z4 in December, since the sales of the Mazda MX-5 (see test) are worse. Remember, if you are looking for an Audi TT Roadster you will have to search already among used cars.
Compact MPVs: Average discount: 11.6%
They gain six tenths of the average discounts compared to those we saw last month, although there are no changes in the first position since the Toyota Proace City with a gasoline engine continues to be lower than the Peugeot Rifter (in this case associated with the 1.5 BlueHDI diesel ). The Citroën Berlingo Combi completes the podium, ahead of the Volkswagen Touran with a 1.5 TSI EVO engine.
Compact SUVs. Average discount: 8.7%
The offers of this thriving segment have fallen by two tenths (the same as last month), where the Suzuki S-Cross is the model with the highest Christmas sales, surpassing the Korean Kia Xceed, with the entry-level gasoline engine, and the Kia Sportage. Like last month, the Seat Ateca was about to enter the podium.
Medium sedans. Average discount: 8.8%
The average discounts in the category fall just one tenth, so the Alfa Romeo Giulia has the situation to be the most discounted model, ahead of the Volvo S60, although the Volkswagen Arteon is hot on its heels.
Average family cars. Average discount: 9.8%
Average discounts drop two points and in November the Volkswagen Passat is the model with the highest discount, ahead of the Volvo V60 and the Arteon Shooting Brake.
Midsize coupes: Average discount: 6.1%
Discounts in this category drop six tenths of a point. The BMW 4 Series leads the sales, this month ahead of the Mercedes C-Class Coupé and the Audi A5. Very few sales of the Ford Mustang (see proof).
Midsize convertibles: Average discount: 6.8%
The discounts of these cars earn a tenth. The BMW 4 Series Cabrio follows the model that is imposed (in dealer discounts) this month on the Mercedes C-Class Cabrio and the Audi A5 Cabrio. Yes, exactly like in November.
Large minivans. Average discount: 10.1%
The average discounts in this category drop by half a point, where the Ford S-Max that left us with such a good taste in our mouths in our test, is the most discounted along with the Galaxy (both are discontinued very soon). The Opel Zafira Life completes the podium, although the Peugeot Traveler has very similar discounts.
Family SUV. Average discount: 5.7%
The average discounts in December improved by one tenth, which does not prevent the Alfa Romeo Stelvio (see test) from continuing to be the car with the best discounts. It is closely followed by the Volvo XC60 and the Hyundai Santa Fe completes the podium, with discounts very similar to those we see on the Kia Sorento.
Big sedans. Average discount: 6.5%
Discounts improve by four tenths and the Volvo S90 continues as the most discounted model. Exactly the same as last month, the BMW 5 Series sales improve on those of the Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6.
Large relatives. Average discount: 7.8%
The discounts in December for these bodies earn a couple of tenths. But there are no surprises. The Volvo V90 is still ahead of the BMW 5 Series Touring. Be careful, this month the Mercedes E-Class Estate has better discounts than the Audi A6 Avant or the Jaguar XF Sportbrake.
