Pierre Gasley is in serious trouble. He is one step away from being penalized for all the penalty points he accumulates on his super license. Alpine could lose its pilot in the middle of the next season in case the FIA sanctioned him again.
The team has already asked for the rules to be changed and now it has been Gasly himself who has done it. In statements collected by ‘Motorsport’, he talks about “review it this winter”: “I try to be aware of that. I think my approach to racing has always been the same.”
“I really hope that we can review the whole system this winter, because I think I will not be the only pilot I’m in trouble if we continue like this”, comments the former AlphaTauri driver.
He defends himself by assuring that he “he is not a dangerous pilot” and that he has been “being careful in the races” for some time because of the possible penalty: “I try to be careful with all the, let’s say, silly penalty points that you can lose for procedures and things like that.”
“We talk about it all the time. Some are only four points away from the penalty with 24 races and six sprints to go, that’s 30 races a year, and when it was introduced we only had 19 or 20. So clearly it would make sense. add more points to that card”, he details.
otmar szafnauerhead of the Alpine team, described as “regrettable” that his pilot is “on the verge of suspension”: “I don’t think that at the time of approving the rule it was thought that it could harm another team. But things are like that, sometimes unless we can change them.”
Gasly could miss some tests next year and that could become a serious problem for the French team. Because he replace his new signing and replacement of Fernando Alonso it won’t be easy.
