The new regulation of Formula 1scheduled for 2021 but postponed to 2022 due to the coronavirus, arrived at the ‘Great Circus’ with the aim of increasing competitiveness and offering a greater show, but the result, at least in the first year of regulations, has not been different from previous seasons .
With only two teams capable of fighting for pole position and with max verstappen Y Red Bull dominating the competition in the second half of the campaign, there have been many criticisms of the lack of effectiveness of the original idea of F1.
Others, for their part, ask for time for the new regulation to take effect. In fact, analyzing this new regulation, Fernando Alonso Y Carlos Sainz They agree and differ on various points.
“I think Formula 1 did well. In general, I think these new cars have allowed us to run closer, being able to overtake in places and curves or on circuits where before it was always more difficult. Therefore, I think the competition is more exciting,” said the man from Madrid, who sees it as easier to overtake.
The Spaniard, on the contrary, does not agree: “Following another car is easier, but overtaking is still not as easy as it seems on TV. In the slow corners, the cars are very slow. Due to the heavy weight, it always seems as if you have 100 liters of fuel on board.”
According to Sainz, the differences between teams will decrease: “I think the differences on the grid are still relatively large, but as soon as this regulation stabilizes, I think we will all converge and the championship will become more and more interesting as the years and races go by. I think it was the right direction.”
“I was hoping we could see a bit more variety in qualifying, in the early positions. Hopefully, This is something that can improve in the coming years”Explain.
“There will always be one or two dominant teams, but at least, hopefully, with advantages not big enough to not give the rest opportunities to fight for podiums. That was one of the big goals,” he adds.
Fernando speaks of “disappointment”: “Yes, It was a bit disappointing to realize that things haven’t changed dramatically. There are at most two teams that can win races, as has been the case in recent years.”
“And the gap between the top two or three teams and the rest is still too big. In 50% of the races we are one lap from the winner. That is why we have not yet achieved the result that Formula 1 intended with the new regulations,” he adds.
Finally, about the financial and regulatory constraints, both do not coincide again. “Hopefully with the limitations of the wind tunnel, etc., we’ll go towards similar performance for most computersSainz says.
“I don’t think the budget cap will have much impact. Rather the rules. They are very restrictive. There is not much left to invent. The best teams are already quite close to the limit, and the others will catch up,” Alonso replies in contrast.
