Following the success of the well-remembered Worker, which started the brand’s range of trucks, and the current Constellation and Delivery, which not only consolidated this success but also expanded it, Volkswagen takes the next step to become a full-range player in our market: it officially presented the new Meteor, with which it lands in the extra-heavy segment, the only one in which the company still did not have its own representative in the region.
Many of its characteristics were already known to us first when it was unveiled in Brazil and then at its avant premiere at Expoagro, La Rural and Expotransporte, but this week its official presentation finally arrived at an event held at the Buenos Aires Autodromo.
Created under the characteristic concept of the Volkswagen Trucks and Buses division of offering products with the right technology and equipment for each segment in order to achieve the best price/product ratio, the Meteor is a highly versatile truck designed for multiple applications, such as dump trucks, general or refrigerated cargo vans, dry cargo, vehicle transport trays (mosquito), bulk carrier, container ship, sider, silo, tank, among others. With it, the brand aims mainly at the scalability segment, although for the moment not at bitren since it lacks Stability Control (ESP), an item that the company’s spokespersons have already clarified to us, will be incorporated in 2024 throughout the portfolio along with the arrival of the 29,520 6×4 version, which will meet all the requirements of current regulations.
Broadly speaking, the Meteor is based on the MAN TGX, with adaptations of both design and configuration and tuning to adapt them to the requirements of carriers in the region. Aesthetically, this adaptation was carried out by a team of designers in Germany, with a front inspired by the Delivery, with a horizontal format grille with chrome appliqués and studied aerodynamics together with functional details such as the bumper divided into 7 parts, which facilitates and saves on repair.

To enter the cab, the driver is provided with doors that open 90° and ergonomically positioned steps, allowing obstacle-free, easy and safe access, with handles at both ends of the doors. Another highly worked aspect is its ergonomics: the steering wheel has height and depth adjustments, it is multifunctional, with control keys positioned for quick and direct access, without having to take your hands off it.
On the instrument panel, the modular concept stands out, which allows organizing devices such as radio, multimedia, tachograph and specific equipment for each operation. Up to 50 keys can be positioned on the dashboard, depending on the model configuration, so that the driver can control the most diverse systems quickly and easily. Even the operation of the automated gearbox is done by means of a key in the center of the panel, positioned so as not to distract your attention.

In this same module is the digital air conditioning control: just select the desired temperature with the automatic mode activated to continue traveling comfortably, arranging the cabin for central, lower and upper exits on the windshield and additionally on the door windows , which improves air distribution and cabin climate control. All instrument panel controls are visible and easily accessible. The same happens in the doors with the buttons of the electric window lifters, with a one-touch system, and of the mirrors, which also have heating to prevent them from fogging up on cold days.

The seats have standard armrests, integrated headrest and seat belt integrated into the seat itself. Its suspension system and shape contribute to a journey with less fatigue on board. In addition, the fabrics bring a series of premium technologies, providing a soft touch, reduced dirt, easy cleaning and quick drying, in addition to the use of ecological materials.

For comfort at the time of rest, Volkswagen highlights that the new Meteor brings one of the largest beds on the market, completely flat, curtains for the bedroom and for all windows and windshield, with a “black out” system to guarantee privacy. Under the bed, which is tiltable, there is space for luggage, in addition to the storage compartments, with integrated storage compartments and access from inside the cabin. The rest area also has a USB port to connect devices, digital clock, special lighting and to make it more complete, it is possible to configure it with a retractable multifunctional object holder. It also has a ceiling-mounted climate control, which allows adjustments to be made with the remote control for a pleasant night’s sleep. Optionally, you can incorporate a refrigerator.

Mechanically, the extra-heavyweight debuts the new generation of the 13-liter MAN D26 engine, developed and produced in Brazil, the first country outside of Europe to manufacture it. In this case, it develops a power of 460 hp and 2,300 Nm of torque, available with a 12- or 16- speed ZF Traxon automated gearbox, the latter for specific operations. According to the German firm, the new new propellant provides the customer with superior vehicle performance, with excellent fuel economy, low maintenance cost and adequate durability for the most severe applications. Like other products of the brand, the box has the Eco-roll functions (take advantage of inertia when possible and put the transmission in neutral in a safe and controlled way); Lean sensor (helps maintain proper revs to improve fuel economy); Maneuver Mode (regulates speed and inhibits gear shifting, thus providing a smooth and controlled start); Kick Down (when the accelerator pedal is fully depressed, the transmission downshifts, increasing engine speed for better performance for safe overtaking) and Easystart (hill start assist).

As for configurations, in our market it will be offered with three wheelbase options: 3,200, 3,400 (standard) or 3,600 mm, making it possible to optimize load distribution and adapting to the maximum length permitted by law. All versions will have two fuel tanks, with capacities ranging from 630 to 940 liters, depending on the chosen wheelbase. In addition, the customer will be able to choose the axle ratio that suits their operation, with the support of the sales advisor. The standard version, with a 3,400 mm center distance, comes equipped with two tanks with a capacity of 780 litres. For its part, the urea tank is 100 liters, providing the greatest autonomy in the segment.
Finally, the suspension of the Meteor is pneumatic, with eight lungs of air. It has an intelligent system for reading the load per axle and the redistribution capacity to balance the weight on each one. The driver also has the option of programming the airbags to adjust implement height when loading or unloading the vehicle. All executed by remote control, from inside the cabin.

Already available at brand dealers, the advertised price starts at US$ 160,000 but varies depending on the configuration of each unit and the incorporation of the chosen options.
In this regard, Federico Ojanguren, General Manager of the Trucks and Buses Division of Volkswagen Argentina, stated: “Meteor, which has already been exhibited in Argentina in several places, is approaching the entire public so that they can feel its driving comfort. We are proud that this type of product, which is produced in Latin America, with Volkswagen worldwide design, is part of our family. Argentine drivers will find in Meteor a series of details: innovation, comfort, greater performance, durability and robustness”.
