The stage is over Fernando Alonso in Alpine. Two years that in the end have become long for the pilot. From the famous ‘Plan’ to abandoning almost half of all races. Also in the last one in Abu Dhabi, where the car of Esteban Ocon yes it ended. The same old story again.
And in the team, despite the Asturian’s messages about the mechanical problems they have suffered, they downplay it. It’s what the boss of Alpine has done, otmar szafnauerwho has recognized that Alonso’s car has had “more breakdowns” than that of the French driver.
“Yeah, I mean, I’m sure he had more breakdowns than Esteban. And it was always at times when he could have scored good points. I’m not happy either that, for example, in Melbourne, which I think could have been on pole position, I had a problem in qualifying”, commented the team boss.
“Even if we hadn’t had any problems with Fernando’s car and he had added all these points that he lost, we would have finished fourth in the championship. That was our objective and we have achieved it”, the Romanian justifies himself.
But despite these explanations, he acknowledges that it has been “disappointing” in many ways everything that happened this season. They did finish ahead of McLaren, in fourth position in the constructors’ world championship.
Alonso couldn’t take it anymore
The Asturian, who left at the beginning of the test, explained the reason: “The engine once again. I think I was losing water and well, they told me to stop and nothing, I had to stop early… the summary of the year”.
“I think we have been more or less fast all yearbut I think there are six dropouts, plus in Australia the car broke down in time trial, in Austria it didn’t even start in the sprint, in Canada I ran out of battery… It’s not just six dropouts, there are many more, nine or ten “, he said on ‘DAZN’.
