Life in the reflection of the desert: Invisible House

This architectural structure, which is covered almost entirely by mirrors, was built near the center of Joshua Tree, southeast of Los Angeles.

Built by architect Tomas Osinski, this building becomes almost invisible when viewed from the outside, reflecting the surrounding desert landscape, thanks to exterior mirrors.

Built in an area very close to Joshua Tree National Park, Invisible House was specially designed and implemented for filmmaker Chris Hanley. Constructed of steel and glass, the 30-meter-long reflective exterior blends in with the surrounding desert and cliffs, making it nearly invisible.

Built on a 90-acre site, the Invisible House was built higher off the ground thanks to cylindrical concrete columns set below on one side. The house, which has an area of 511 square meters, has an indoor pool of 30 square meters. The house has multiple floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that feel directly connected to nature.

It is invisible thanks to its reflective façade.

There are 4 rooms for rent in Invisible House, which is very interesting for activities such as cinema and photography. There is a glass bed in the bedroom. Four bedrooms and bathrooms have white screens instead of doors so as not to block the view.

Resembling a horizontal skyscraper, the house with a streamlined steel facade is covered with mirrored and tempered glass used for skyscrapers. Because it is completely covered in mirrors, the Invisible House becomes nearly invisible as it adapts to the desert environment.

Located 10 minutes from the city center, the living room and dining room are located around the pool. The concrete thermal mass in the 30 meter indoor pool creates a more comfortable living space by balancing the ambient temperature on hot days and cool nights.

Desert view that can be seen from the entire house. The phenomenon of permeability is also supported by furniture designs. Perfect concrete floors and modern armchairs form a whole with shiny glass surfaces, creating a unique relaxation area for guests.

The kitchen in the house was built for smaller events and has only 2 ovens, a refrigerator and a freezer.

The heating system of the house is designed in an environmentally friendly way. Solar panels are used to heat water and generate electricity. The energy needs of the house were also covered by installing a photovoltaic and thermal water heating system on the roof through the use of low-emission glass for the walls.

Hanley claims that all environmental protection regulations were specifically adhered to when planning the house. Before the implementation of the project, the surrounding flora and fauna maps were examined in detail. Invisible House has been designed with birds in mind so that it does not pose a threat to them. It is claimed that birds can survive insects around the house without being harmed by reflective glass.
